Why does ChatGPT recommend other mattress brands and not mine? (Malaysia)
EasyFound · · 8 min read
In EasyFound's test, about half the times ChatGPT named a Malaysian mattress brand, it cited that brand's own page, often one stating what the shopper asked, such as back-pain firmness, trial nights or a KL showroom. For a plain best-brand question, it leaned on one buying-guide site. No question kept the same brand first every time. Check what ChatGPT says about your brand, then fix the pages it needs.
Our reading of the test: ChatGPT passes over a Malaysian mattress brand when it finds no page that answers the shopper's actual question with that brand's name on it. About half the times it named a brand, the same answer cited that brand's own website, often a page spelling out what was asked, such as firmness for back pain, trial nights, delivery to Penang or a KL showroom. For a plain "best brand" question, it mostly repeated whichever brands a Malaysian buying-guide site listed.
One brand dominated EasyFound's test: it turned up in 13 of 18 ChatGPT answers to Malaysian mattress questions (CSV). Most of the other brands appeared once or twice. What follows is what the named brands had in front of ChatGPT, and what the missing ones lacked.
What are the five reasons ChatGPT passes over a mattress brand in Malaysia?
Five patterns in ChatGPT's answers show where a Malaysian mattress brand gets passed over, each tied to a page it did or didn't cite. They describe what it cited, not a proven cause.
- The brand isn't on the "best mattress in Malaysia" lists. Asked for the best mattress brand in Malaysia, ChatGPT cited the same Malaysian buying-guide site in all three runs. In two runs it cited nothing else, so it named the brands on that site's lists. The third run also cited two brands' own review pages and put first the brand whose page ranked itself top, while noting the ranking was the brand's own. That is one answer, and we wouldn't build a page that ranks your brand above rivals; getting onto independent lists with correct facts is the safer route.
- The trial and delivery terms aren't on a page of their own. Asked for an online mattress with a free trial and delivery to Penang, all three answers cited only brands' own websites. Every brand named came with a trial length or a trial line. Two runs cited one brand's own Penang delivery page.
- The showroom details aren't on a page ChatGPT can cite. Asked for a local brand to try in a KL showroom, ChatGPT searched each time. In two of three runs its searches returned only Google and Facebook pages; it cited none and hedged, for example "depending on current setup". The third run cited brands' store-finder pages and a multi-brand showroom's site.
- The product pages don't say who each mattress suits. Back pain came up in three questions, asked in English, Malay and Chinese. In seven of those nine answers, ChatGPT cited brands' own product or collection pages and repeated words like medium-firm, latex, pocket springs and zoned support. It searched in English even for the Malay and Chinese questions, as our language study also found.
- The top spot moves anyway. No question kept the same brand first in every run. Half kept it in two runs out of three. So one check on your phone is a snapshot, which is why ChatGPT gives a different answer every time.
What did the mattress brands ChatGPT named in Malaysia have in common?
About half the time, the mattress brands ChatGPT named in Malaysia had their own page cited in the same answer. ChatGPT named a brand or retailer 88 times in all. In 47 of those, the same answer cited that business's own website, the mattress version of why ChatGPT cites a competitor.
| When ChatGPT named a business, the answer cited… | Times (of 88) |
|---|---|
| That business's own website | 47 |
| Only other pages: buying guides, retailers, Lazada, other brands' pages, news | 25 |
| No page at all | 16 |
The brand named most, Brand A, had a page for most of the shopper needs we tested: a trial page, a collection page with a back-support range, product pages and a buying guide. Its own pages were cited in eight answers. It was also the first brand named in eight. Our reading is that one clear page per shopper need kept it in the answers; we saw what ChatGPT cited, not why.
Brands' own guides carried rivals too. In one back-pain answer, one brand's comparison page supplied Brand A's price, and another brand's "best mattresses" page supplied a third brand's.
Which facts does ChatGPT repeat about mattress brands in Malaysia?
In our Malaysian test, ChatGPT repeated a mattress brand's materials and firmness far more often than its trial, warranty or price. The other facts came up mainly when the shopper asked for them.
| Fact stated next to a named brand | Answers (of 18) | Mostly in answers to |
|---|---|---|
| Materials: latex, pocket springs, zones | 13 | Back pain, best brand, showroom |
| Firmness | 10 | Back pain, best brand |
| Trial period | 5 | Online trial with Penang delivery |
| Made in Malaysia or a local brand | 6 | KL showroom, back pain |
| Price in ringgit | 3 | Back pain under RM3,000 |
| Showroom or store | 3 | KL showroom |
| Delivery area | 3 | Online trial with Penang delivery |
| Warranty | 2 | Best brand |
| Star rating or review count | 0 | None |
None of these 18 answers quoted a star rating or a review count for any brand, much as our Google reviews test found ratings rarely repeated. What ChatGPT passed on were specs, terms and locations.
Check your brand in three places: what should a Malaysian mattress brand fix first for ChatGPT?
Each reason above points to a place you can check this week.
- ChatGPT itself, through EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says about your brand when shoppers ask what your customers ask, for example "Can I try a latex mattress in a showroom in PJ this weekend?", and which brands come back instead. Then go through the answers with us on a free call.
- Your own website. Give each shopper question a plain-text page: firmness and who each mattress suits, trial nights and how returns work, delivery by state (including Penang, Sabah and Sarawak), and every showroom's address and hours. Describe how a mattress is built rather than promising to fix back pain. Let ChatGPT's crawler in: OpenAI says "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers).
- The lists and listings other people publish. Search "best mattress in Malaysia" and "tilam terbaik" yourself and see whether the buying guides include you with correct facts. Send their editors accurate specs and trial terms, and make your Lazada and Shopee listings match your website.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a GEO or AI visibility service that works with mattress brands in Malaysia?
Ask any provider, EasyFound included, to show you ChatGPT's answers to your shoppers' real questions, each asked several times, with the pages every answer cited. No public comparison lets anyone fairly name a best one, and we sell this work ourselves, so hold our claims to the same test. Be wary of a promised top spot: in EasyFound's test of Malaysian mattress questions, no question kept the same brand first every time it was asked.
Why does ChatGPT keep naming the same big mattress brands in Malaysia?
Our reading is that a few brands have a page for most of the things shoppers ask about. In EasyFound's test of 18 ChatGPT answers to Malaysian mattress questions, the most-named brand appeared in 13. Its own trial, collection and product pages were cited in eight of those. Brands also gained from one Malaysian buying-guide site, which ChatGPT cited in all three answers to a plain best-brand question.
Does ChatGPT use Shopee or Lazada reviews to recommend a mattress?
Rarely, in EasyFound's Malaysian test. Of 18 ChatGPT answers, one cited Lazada: a product-listing page and two Lazada blog guides, not product reviews. ChatGPT searched Shopee once and cited nothing from it. None of the 18 answers quoted a star rating or a review count for any mattress brand. Most answers cited brands' own websites instead.
Does ChatGPT know where mattress showrooms are in KL?
Not reliably, in EasyFound's test. A shopper's request for a local mattress brand to try in a KL showroom was asked three times. In two runs ChatGPT cited no page at all and hedged on showroom details. The third run cited brands' store-finder pages and a multi-brand showroom's website. Put every showroom's address and hours on your own website as text.

Our data: EasyFound, 18 ChatGPT answers to six Malaysian mattress buying questions, each asked three times on 16 October 2026 through OpenAI's Responses API (gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17, web search available, approximate location Malaysia). That is the developer API, not the ChatGPT app, which can answer differently. Four questions were in English, one in Malay and one in Chinese; they were short and typed like searches ("best mattress brand in Malaysia", "online mattress in Malaysia with a free trial and delivery to Penang"). ChatGPT searched in all 18 answers. The Malay and Chinese questions led to 18 search queries, none of them in Malay or Chinese. Gemini was not tested: its API returned no answers that day. We also asked ChatGPT this article's title twice the same way; it did not search the web and cited no page either time, so those two answers are not in the counts.
We read every answer in full and hand-coded it. A business is a brand or retailer a shopper could buy a mattress from; three of the businesses counted are retailers (a multi-brand mattress showroom chain and two large home-furnishing retailers), and a retailer quoted only for general advice wasn't counted. The answers named 28 businesses. The median answer named five. Of the 28, 10 were named only once. Each cited site counts once per answer and is typed by page: a brand's own site, a buying-guide site, a retailer, Lazada, news or a forum. A brand's own site includes its parent company's site (one answer) and review, comparison or "best mattresses" pages the brand wrote itself (flagged in the CSV). "Cited" means linked in the answer text. Facts were coded per answer when stated next to a named brand; firmness and "local brand" took the most judgement. Labels replace names because three runs of six questions are a sample, not a ranking. Download the per-answer data (CSV).
