What does ChatGPT tell parents choosing an international school in KL? (Malaysia)
EasyFound · · 8 min read
ChatGPT told parents there is no single best international school, then gave different lists depending on the wording: schools it called top-tier or high-fee for a plain 'best school' question, and schools it called affordable when a parent said so. It quoted fees mostly from directories and fee guides. None of 18 answers mentioned Ministry of Education approval. What your admissions pages state clearly is what it can repeat.
ChatGPT told parents there is no single best international school in KL, then handed them a different list depending on how they asked. Ask for the "best" school, in English or Chinese, and it named mostly long-established schools it described as top-tier or high-fee. Say "affordable" and it named schools it described as affordable or lower-fee instead, and the two lists shared just one name. Most of the fee figures it gave came from directories and fee guides.
The questions in our test were short and typed like searches, such as "best international school in Kuala Lumpur". A real parent writes more: "We're moving to KL next year with two kids, one in primary and one in secondary. Which international schools are good and roughly how much a year?" ChatGPT searched the web before every answer, so what it said depended on which pages it found.
Does ChatGPT repeat an international school's curriculum and IGCSE results to parents in KL?
ChatGPT repeated international schools' curricula readily, but gave an IGCSE figure for only half the schools it named for results. In the IGCSE answers, it named schools 20 times:
- With a results figure or award: 10 times, half from the school's own results page.
- Without a figure ("outstanding results", a link to a results page, or reputation alone): 10 times.
The school named first in all three runs had a results page that sets out its IGCSE results as plain percentages, and each answer quoted the same one. Our reading is that a quotable number helped, though we saw what was cited, not why.
Not every figure was current. An answer used a pass rate from 2021. Two answers took a school's results from its recruitment brief for a head of primary. One run also cited a copy of a school's results page on an unrelated website (per-answer data).
All three answers warned that schools report results in different formats, so the figures don't compare like for like. We asked about IGCSE only, not A-levels.
Does ChatGPT quote international school fees in Malaysia, and from whose page?
ChatGPT quoted international school fees in ringgit in 10 of our 18 answers, but mostly from directories and fee guides rather than schools' own fee pages.
| Parent's question (3 runs each) | Fee figures | Page cited beside them |
|---|---|---|
| Best international school in KL (English) | 0 | None |
| Affordable British-curriculum school, Klang Valley | 7 | 3 school pages, 4 directories or guides |
| Penang school, relocating from Singapore | 3 | 2 school pages, 1 directory |
| KL schools with good IGCSE results | 0 | None |
| Good Selangor school and its fees (Malay) | 18 | 1 school page, 17 directories or guides |
| Better KL school and its fees (Chinese) | 10 | 4 school pages, 5 guides, 1 government guide |
Seven answers also warned of extras on top of tuition, such as deposits, buses and exam fees. Five mentioned SST on school fees, each time beside a school's own fee page (CSV). A Chinese answer gave a school's fees from a government investment guide dated 2024, well below what another run quoted for the same school.
What does ChatGPT weigh for a family relocating from Singapore to a Penang international school?
ChatGPT weighed curriculum continuity and where the family will live first, for a 10-year-old moving from Singapore to Penang. Across three answers, it raised:
- British or Cambridge versus IB: all three.
- Where the family will live, and the commute: all three.
- Which year group the child enters: two.
- Fees and total cost: two.
- Transition and English support: two.
- Waitlists and entry assessments: one.
In two runs, every link went to the same school directory. The remaining run searched schools' own websites and cited five schools' own pages, most of them fee pages. Only that run gave year-group fees.
Does ChatGPT answer Malay and Chinese questions about international schools differently?
ChatGPT searched in English for Malay and Chinese questions about international schools, but cited different kinds of page for each. All 26 of its search queries for them were in English, in line with our earlier test of Malay and Chinese questions. Each of those answers had "official" in at least one search query.
For the Malay question about Selangor schools and fees, all but one of the 18 fee figures came from directories or fee guides, mostly a single fee directory. For the Chinese question about KL, ChatGPT cited schools' own fee pages more often, and one answer copied a school's full fee table, including its registration fee. Our reading: a clear fee page on your own site gives ChatGPT something to quote even when it searches in English for a Chinese question.
What should an international school's admissions pages state so ChatGPT repeats them correctly?
Our reading: ChatGPT repeated what schools' own pages stated plainly, and filled the gaps from directories.
- Run EasyFound's free check first on a real parent's question, such as Year 7 fees in Petaling Jaya, then go through ChatGPT's answer with us on a free call.
- Publish one fee page for the current school year. List each year group in ringgit, with one-off fees, the deposit and SST, as text on the page. Take down or relabel last year's fee PDFs.
- Give results their own page. State the exam, the year, the cohort size and one headline measure parents can compare, such as A*/A rate.
- Answer the relocation questions. Say which year group each age joins, whether you take mid-year transfers, and how assessment and waitlists work.
- State your Ministry of Education approval. A licensing guide from 2013, still on the trade ministry's website, says of opening an international school: "The approval of Ministry of Education (MoE) is required." (MPC guide on MITI's website). None of our 18 answers raised it.
- Keep fee directories in step with your fee page. Most fee figures came from them, so send them your new fees each school year.

Frequently asked questions
Which GEO or AI search agency should an international school in Malaysia hire?
We can't tell you which is best: nobody publishes a like-for-like comparison of these providers, and EasyFound is one of the companies selling this work, so weigh our answer accordingly. Judge any provider by what it shows you: ChatGPT's actual answers to parents' questions about fees, IGCSE results and moving schools, asked in English, Malay and Chinese, each more than once, with the page behind every fee or results figure. In EasyFound's own test of 18 answers, most fee figures came from directories rather than schools' own pages, so a useful check names the page, not just the school.
Where does ChatGPT get the fee figures it gives parents for KL international schools?
Mostly from school directories and fee-guide sites, in EasyFound's Malaysian test. ChatGPT stated a ringgit fee for a named school in 10 of 18 answers. Directories and fee guides supplied 27 of the 38 fee figures. Schools' own fee pages supplied most of the rest, and a government investment guide supplied one. The plain 'best international school in Kuala Lumpur' question gave no fee figures at all. Questions that asked about fees, or said 'affordable', did.
Where does ChatGPT get IGCSE results for international schools in KL?
Mostly from the schools themselves, in EasyFound's test. Asked which KL international schools have good IGCSE results, ChatGPT gave a results figure or award 10 times across our runs. Half came from schools' own results pages, and two more from a school's recruitment brief. Wikipedia, a directory and a copy of a school's page on an unrelated website supplied one each. Schools that only announced 'outstanding results' were named without a figure.
Does ChatGPT tell parents whether an international school is approved by the Ministry of Education?
Not in EasyFound's test. None of 18 ChatGPT answers to Malaysian parents' questions about international schools mentioned Ministry of Education approval or registration, in English, Malay or Chinese. A business-licensing guide from 2013, still published on the trade ministry (MITI) website, says of opening an international school: 'The approval of Ministry of Education (MoE) is required.' Our reading is that a school should state its approval on its own admissions page, since ChatGPT did not raise it unprompted.

Our data: EasyFound, What ChatGPT told parents in 18 answers about international schools in Malaysia, 18 October 2026. Six questions from EasyFound's standard question set for international schools, each asked three times through OpenAI's Responses API (gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17, web search available, approximate location Malaysia): four in English, one in Malay ("sekolah antarabangsa yang bagus di Selangor dan berapa yurannya") and one in Chinese ("吉隆坡哪间国际学校比较好,学费多少"). Parents using the ChatGPT app, logged in or not, may get different answers from this developer API. Gemini was not tested. We also asked ChatGPT this article's title twice the same way; one run cited only OpenAI's help pages and the other cited nothing, so neither is in the counts.
Each answer was read in full, in its own language, and coded by hand. A school is one a parent could enrol a child at; each campus counts separately. ChatGPT searched in all 18 answers and named 116 schools in all, 50 different ones, a median of six per answer. "Best" lists are the six English and Chinese best-school answers (15 schools); "affordable" is the three Klang Valley answers (8 schools); one school was in both, flagged in both of its affordable-list appearances as not cheap or much more expensive. Each cited site counts once per answer (72 in all) and is typed by page: a school's own site (38), a directory or fee-guide site (26), an education provider's guide to other schools (2), a school document on a file host (2), Wikipedia (2), a copy of a school's page elsewhere (1) and a government guide (1). The two provider guides are fee comparisons on the sites of an international school and a Cambridge learning centre, kept apart from schools' own pages because they rank other schools; the file-host document is one school's recruitment brief for a head of primary, counted as that school's own document; the copy is a school's results page reproduced on an unrelated domain. A fee figure is a ringgit amount or band stated beside a named school, coded with the page cited for it (38 in 10 answers). In the IGCSE answers, a results figure is a percentage, count or named award stated in the answer (10 of 20 namings); a pointer to a results page or record without a figure was not counted. Ministry of Education approval was searched for in all three languages (terms such as ministry, MOE, KPM, kementerian, 教育部, approved, registered, berdaftar, 注册); the only hits were about registration fees. The CSV uses school labels, not names: 18 answers show what parents were told on one day, and rank no school. Download the per-answer data (CSV).
EasyFound sells AI visibility checks and the page work that follows, so we gain if schools act on this. Weigh the advice with that in mind.
Other source: Malaysia Productivity Corporation, International Schools, MPC Business Enabling Framework, on the website of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) (PDF, link), read 18 October 2026. The PDF carries no date on the page; its file metadata dates it to November 2013. It names the Ministry of Education as the regulator under the Education Act 1996. We quote it because the Ministry of Education's own page on international schools (moe.gov.my) returned only a blank bot-check page on 18 October 2026, through a browser and a reader proxy.
